A brief survey of de.nycgo.com found major hreflang errors like conflicting hreflang/canonical tags and no self-referencing hreflang tags. We provided detailed documentation of recommended changes to language meta tags and submitted these to the NYCGO development team who implemented the changes. Once live, Hudson Creative inspected and tested the changes to make sure they were indexed correctly by search engines.
By fixing language meta tags for Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese, Googlebot was able to index these language-specific articles more easily and provide higher rankings for searches in these languages: 85% pageviews increase for Spanish subdomains, 91% pageviews increase for French subdomains, 89% pageview increase for Brazilian Portuguese subdomains, and 18% pageviews increase for German subdomains.
